What to expect

The Africanist Museum in Olkusz, founded in 1971, is one of the most unusual ethnographic collections in the Małopolska region. Its holdings document the daily life of the peoples of West and Central Africa, with a particular focus on the Tuareg, Dogon, Bambara and Bushongo. Many of the objects originally served ceremonial and magical purposes, which gives the display an anthropological weight rather than a purely decorative one.

The collection includes richly decorated masks, fetishes, musical instruments, weapons, traditional dress and children’s toys, along with ivory and malachite ornaments and African paintings. For an international traveller it is a rare chance to encounter authentic African art and craft in a small town north-west of Krakow, and a good fit for anyone whose interests run to world cultures rather than the usual castle-and-cathedral circuit.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open Tuesday to Friday from 9:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry half an hour before closing. Tickets are available through the online sales system. The museum occupies the Culture Centre building on Szpitalna Street. About 45 minutes is enough to see the exhibition. Labelling is chiefly in Polish, so allow a little extra time if you want to read the context in full.

Getting there

Olkusz lies about 40 km north-west of Krakow on the Krakow-Częstochowa Upland. By car the DK94 road takes roughly an hour. Trains and buses also run from Krakow, and the Olkusz railway station is within walking distance of the centre. It works well as a day trip combining the museum with the nearby Trail of the Eagles’ Nests and its ruined hilltop castles.

For an ethnographic frame around the African holdings, Krakow’s Ethnographic Museum is the obvious pairing, while the Archaeological Museum covers the deep human past. Traditional regional folk culture is shown in the open air at the Orava Ethnographic Park in Zubrzyca Górna.
