AGH Museum

What to expect

The AGH Museum is the academic museum of the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow, devoted to the history of technology, mining and metallurgy. It grew out of a research unit set up in 1957, with 1960 taken as the symbolic date of its founding, and was shaped by Dr Mieczysław Radwan, a metallurgist and historian of technology who joined the university in 1954. After several reorganisations it took the name Muzeum AGH in 2014 and has operated as an auxiliary university unit since 2019.

This is a specialist, research-oriented museum rather than a hands-on science centre, and it sits inside a working university rather than on the standard tourist trail. Its work centres on the foundations of the history of technology and on documenting Poland’s mining and metallurgical heritage. For a visitor with a genuine interest in industrial history and the story of one of Poland’s leading technical universities it is a niche find; casual sightseers with limited time will get more from the larger museums nearer the Old Town.

Visiting in practice

The museum occupies pavilion C-2, fifth floor, reached by lift from building C-3 or by an entrance on Czarnowiejska Street. Because it is an academic unit within an active campus, the university’s official history portal does not publish fixed opening hours or ticket prices. It is best to contact the university in advance to confirm access and arrange a visit.

Getting there

The museum is at al. Mickiewicza 30, on the main AGH campus, west of the Old Town and about 1.5 km from the Main Square (Rynek Główny) - roughly a 20-minute walk or a short tram ride. The nearest tram stops are on al. Mickiewicza, by the AGH campus and the Jagiellonian Library. The Błonia meadows lie just beyond, and the National Museum’s Main Building stands right across the avenue.

Nearby

A few steps away on al. 3 Maja, the National Museum Main Building holds galleries of Polish art. For technology fans, the Museum of Engineering and Technology in Kazimierz offers a full interactive display, while Cogiteon is a family science centre.
