Amber Museum

What to expect

The Amber Museum in Krakow sits on Świętego Jana street, a couple of minutes north of the Main Square, and is devoted entirely to Baltic amber - the fossilised resin that has been traded on this coast for thousands of years. The display explains how resin turned to stone over millions of years and shows specimens with inclusions: insects, plant fragments and other prehistoric life trapped in the clear mass, including a rare piece with a droplet of water sealed inside. A separate section compares Baltic succinite with other fossil resins from around the world.

The museum also runs an amber laboratory that uses infrared spectroscopy to verify whether a specimen is genuine, so you can see how real amber is told apart from imitations. Worth knowing before you plan your time: since November 2023 the exhibition has run as a reduced display integrated with the adjacent Boruni Gallery, where contemporary and traditional amber jewellery is shown and sold. In practice this is a small, free stop of fifteen to twenty minutes rather than a multi-hour museum, and it pairs naturally with amber shopping.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 20:00 and admission is free, which makes it an easy add-on to an Old Town walk - you can drop in for a quarter of an hour and browse the amber gallery at the same time. An online virtual tour is available if you want a preview. Given its size and free entry, expect a light visit rather than a headline attraction.

Getting there

The museum stands at Świętego Jana 2, one of the elegant streets running north off the Main Square (Rynek Główny), so it is a two-minute walk from the square itself. From Kraków Główny railway station it is about ten minutes on foot through the Planty park and the Old Town; the nearest tram stops are on the edge of the Planty. The Old Town’s restricted traffic zone rules out arriving by car.

A few doors up the same street is the Czartoryski Museum, home to Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. On the Main Square itself the Sukiennice Gallery shows 19th-century Polish painting, and directly beneath the square the Rynek Underground offers an archaeological route below the medieval market.
