What to expect

The Museum of History and Ethnography in Andrychów is a private museum built on a simple motto: “Ratujmy co się da!” (“Let us save what we can”), the guiding principle of its founder, Edward Wincenty Szlagor. It occupies the authentic house and farm buildings of the Szlagor family, on a plot where a mill, a sawmill and a pond operated at the turn of the 20th century. A stone dwelling and a barn over forty metres long survive, rescued by the founder through years of conservation work. The museum was formally established under Poland’s museum law, with ministerial consent granted in 2002.

The collection has two strands. Inside the stone building, residential and office interiors from the 1920s have been recreated, complete with original furniture, the full records of the old sawmill office, and a private money-lending ledger from the interwar years. The long barn holds farm machinery and tools: grain mills, harrows, threshing flails, querns, butter churns, scales, horse harnesses, yokes, cart wheels and ox equipment. For a visitor this is a chance to see the material culture of the Beskid foothills in its own setting rather than behind glass.

A separate and moving part of the museum keeps the memory of Jewish Andrychów. It holds over 300 objects documenting the religious and everyday life of Polish Jews - candles, Torah scrolls, prayer shawls, phylacteries, Talmudic texts, items of clothing and household utensils - alongside photographs, documents and accounts of the town’s former inhabitants and their fates. For an international visitor interested in Jewish heritage off the main routes, this is the reason to make the trip.

Visiting in practice

This is a private institution with no fixed opening timetable. Its own contact page gives a single sentence on access: “Muzeum czynne w okresie letnim po wcześniejszym uzgodnieniu” - open in the summer season by prior arrangement. There are therefore no fixed opening hours and no fixed opening days, so you must book a visit in advance by email (ziemianstwo@poczta.onet.pl). The site lists no ticket prices. Confirm the date, access and any admission terms directly with the museum before you travel. Note that the museum operates in Polish; arrange language help in advance if needed.

Getting there

The museum is at ul. Podgórska 3 in Andrychów, in the Little Beskids, about 50 km southwest of Kraków and some 15 km from Wadowice. Driving is the easiest option; Andrychów also sits on the railway line running from Kraków towards Bielsko-Biała. Because visits are by prior arrangement, book before you set off rather than turning up on the day.

Nearby

Andrychów works well as part of a day out across western Małopolska. About 20 km to the northwest, in Oświęcim, stands the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, and on the way back to Kraków it is worth planning a visit to the Wieliczka Salt Mine, one of the oldest working salt-mining monuments in Europe.
