What to expect

The Museum of the Biecz Land tells the story of a former royal town that in the age of the Jagiellonian kings was nicknamed “little Krakow”. Its collection is split between two historic townhouses on the old market square. Kromerowka is a Renaissance merchant house from 1519, remodelled in 1612, with an original stone portal and the building date carved above the door. It takes its name from Marcin Kromer, a Biecz-born bishop, historian and diplomat of the last Jagiellonian era. The second building, the House with the Tower (Dom z Basztą), is a townhouse built around a medieval defensive tower. If you like small-town regional museums where the architecture is part of the exhibit, this is worth a stop.

The museum opened in 1953 as the Regional Museum in Biecz and took its present name in 2003. Displays cover local history, archaeology, guild crafts, old pharmacy and apothecary objects, folk instruments and painting, including pieces linked to Marcin Kromer and the poet Wacław Potocki. Note that labelling is oriented to a Polish audience, so international visitors get the most from the site by pairing a walk through medieval Biecz - the Gothic collegiate church and the town hall tower dominate the skyline - with a guided tour, which the museum offers.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30; it is closed on Mondays, and a “quiet hour” runs from 13:00 to 14:00. Winter hours can shift earlier. A ticket to the House with the Tower costs 18 PLN (reduced 15 PLN, seniors and large families 6 PLN), and Kromerowka is 10 PLN (reduced 6 PLN). A combined ticket covering the House with the Tower, the Corpus Christi collegiate church and the town hall tower is 36 PLN (reduced 25 PLN) and is the best value if you want the full circuit. Admission is free on Fridays, except for the collegiate church, St Anne’s church and the tower.

Getting there

Biecz sits in south-eastern Malopolska, roughly 130 km from Krakow and close to Gorlice. Driving from Krakow takes about two hours, usually via Tarnow and national road 28; there is no fast rail link, so a car or a regional bus toward Gorlice is the practical option. The main office is at Węgierska 1 and the second site, Kromerowka, is at Kromera 3, both within easy walking distance in the historic centre.

The closest partner visit is the Karwacjan Manor gallery in Gorlice, a Gothic and Renaissance seat with an art gallery. On a wider Malopolska itinerary, the Wieliczka Salt Mine and the Tatra Museum in Zakopane round out the region.
