What to expect

Bunkier Sztuki is one of Poland’s leading contemporary art galleries and a municipal cultural institution sitting on plac Szczepański, right at the northwest edge of Krakow’s Old Town. It is a kunsthalle rather than a collection museum: instead of a fixed hang, it runs a changing programme of contemporary art exhibitions, builds its own collection, and hosts education and publishing work. If you want current Polish and international contemporary art within a five-minute walk of the Main Square, this is the address.

The building is as much the attraction as the art. Completed in 1965 to a design by Krystyna Tołłoczko-Różyska, its raw facade of concrete cast in timber formwork made it the only piece of Brutalist architecture inside the Old Town, standing in deliberate contrast to the ornate Art Nouveau Palace of Art next door. Locals nicknamed it “the bunker,” and the name stuck. After a three-year renovation the modernised gallery reopened to the public in February 2024, so what you see today is a freshly refurbished space. Exhibition texts and staff typically accommodate English-speaking visitors, and a single show takes about an hour.

Visiting in practice

The gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00-19:00, and closed on Mondays; the last entry to the exhibitions is 30 minutes before closing. Tickets are priced per exhibition: 11 PLN standard, 6 PLN reduced, with a lower 5 PLN rate every Tuesday, plus a 2 PLN special ticket and a 20 PLN family ticket. You buy at the ticket desk on site during opening hours. Budget roughly an hour per exhibition, a little more if several shows are running at once.

Getting there

Bunkier Sztuki stands at plac Szczepański 3a, beside the Palace of Art on the northwest corner of the Planty park ring. It is a few minutes on foot from the Main Square along ul. Szczepańska, and about fifteen minutes from Kraków Główny railway station through the Old Town. The nearest tram stops are on the edge of the Planty near the Bagatela Theatre; the Old Town’s restricted traffic zone means you cannot drive to the door.

A short walk onto the Main Square brings you to the Sukiennice Gallery and its 19th-century Polish painting, while the Czartoryski Museum nearby holds Leonardo da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine. For more contemporary art, cross the river to the MOCAK Museum of Contemporary Art in the Zabłocie district.
