Castle Museum in Oświęcim

What to expect

An important first note for anyone travelling from Krakow: this is the Castle Museum, the medieval Piast castle of the former Duchy of Oświęcim, and it is a completely separate institution from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial. Both sit in the same town, but a visit here is about the region’s early history, not the wartime camp. The museum occupies the castle hill above the Soła river, whose documented history reaches back to the 11th century, with the first record of the stronghold dating to 1179. What survives is a Gothic castle and a stone tower rebuilt over the centuries.

Inside, the permanent exhibition moves through several layers of the past. The archaeology section shows finds from excavations on the castle hill, in the old town and at the former Wołek fortress: medieval axes, arrowheads, an intact 15th-century clay pot, and a double-edged iron sword unearthed on the hill in 1966. One of its most valuable pieces is the late-Gothic tombstone of Mikołaj Myszkowski from the end of the 15th century. Reconstructed burgher interiors recreate the homes of pre-war Oświęcim, and there are ethnographic collections alongside. Climbing the castle tower adds a panorama over the town and the Soła valley. Note that on-site interpretation is chiefly in Polish, so it helps to read up before you come.

Visiting in practice

Opening hours are seasonal, so check them before you set out. In summer (June to September) the museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00-18:00, and closed on Mondays. For the rest of the year the hours are shorter: Monday to Thursday 10:00-16:00, Friday 10:00-15:00, Sunday 10:00-16:00, with Saturdays closed. A standard ticket to the castle is 12 PLN, reduced 8 PLN, with temporary exhibitions at 5 PLN. The tower is ticketed separately (8 PLN standard, 6 PLN reduced), and there is a combined castle/tower/town hall ticket at 25 PLN standard, 16 PLN reduced. On Tuesdays individual visitors enter the permanent exhibition and the tower free of charge. Guided service is available for individuals and groups. Allow roughly an hour for the museum, more if you add the tower and a walk around town.

Getting there

The museum stands at Zamkowa 1 in the centre of Oświęcim, about 65 km west of Krakow. The simplest way is the direct train from Kraków Główny to Oświęcim station, from where the castle hill is a short walk; long-distance buses also serve the town, and by car the route runs via the A4 motorway and national road 44. It is a half-day trip out of the city, easily combined with a stroll through the old town by the Soła.
