What to expect

This is a small regional natural history museum devoted to the fauna of the Ciężkowice foothills (Pogórze Ciężkowickie), a wooded corner of Małopolska southeast of Kraków. It is named after Włodzimierz Tomek (1912-1995), a local forester, ornithologist and entomologist whose home doubled as a wildlife sanctuary and who helped save the nearby Petrified City rock reserve from sandstone quarrying. The museum opened in 1989 in a former post-war maternity building; the municipality bought his collections after his death, and a 2010-2011 refurbishment turned it into a modern multimedia venue with an interactive floor.

The core of the visit is a rich collection of Polish fauna with a strong emphasis on birds. A roughly 25-minute narrated multimedia presentation walks you among the specimens - birds alongside deer, wild boar and beaver - with interactive stations on bird anatomy and mountain-meadow ecology. A separate “bathyscaphe” room tells the story of the Biała River and its ecological threats (a 13-minute film for individual visitors), while a conference hall displays Poland’s large mammals - bison, moose, wolf and bear - and what the museum calls the largest collection of ruffs in Poland. Labels and presentations are in Polish, so it helps to come with some Polish or a guide.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 to 18:00 and on weekends from 10:00 to 18:00, with last entry one hour before closing. A full ticket to the natural history museum is 15 PLN and a reduced ticket 10 PLN; a guide for an organised group of up to 30 costs 60 PLN. The site is run by the Małopolska Centre for Ecological Education, which also manages the adjacent Petrified City nature reserve (7/5 PLN) and a Tree Canopy Path (40/35 PLN) - easy to combine into a half-day out. Bookings go through rezerwacje@mcee.pl. Allow about an hour for the museum alone; it is worth the detour mainly if you are already exploring the Tarnów foothills or the Petrified City trails.

Getting there

Ciężkowice sits about 90 km east of Kraków. By car the drive runs via Tarnów and takes roughly an hour and a half; the museum is right in the centre of town at 3-go Maja 34. The town also lies on the scenic railway line running south from Tarnów towards Krynica, so it can be reached by train if you would rather not drive.

Nearby

To the east, toward the Beskid Niski mountains, the Biecz Land Museum tells the story of one of Małopolska’s oldest towns, while in neighbouring Gorlice the Karwacjan Manor gallery occupies a Renaissance residence turned art space. Further south, at the foot of the mountains, the Tatra Museum in Zakopane is the regional reference point for the nature and highland culture of the Podhale.
