What to expect

The Museum of the Cistercian Abbey in Szczyrzyc is a collection assembled over centuries inside a still-working monastery on the edge of the Beskid Wyspowy hills, about an hour and a quarter southeast of Kraków. It is part monastic treasury, part cabinet of curiosities and part regional folk room, spread over three floors. The upper hall, known as the armoury, mixes weaponry from across the world - a Japanese katana, a Malay kris, European and Eastern bladed arms, firearms, armour fragments and 16th-century chainmail - alongside an 18th-century copy of a medieval world map, a coin collection running from the reign of Władysław Jagiełło to 1918, minerals, ores and a fossilised mammoth tooth.

The middle floor turns religious: a 16th-century figure of the Mother of God, 18th-century chasubles and dalmatics, folk sculpture, Orthodox church memorabilia and a set of several dozen medals. The lowest level, the folk room, tells the story of Szczyrzyc itself - the monastery brewery with its historic beer labels, mementoes of the local poet Władysław Orkan, the devil-stone legend painted on glass, and traditional Szczyrzyc costumes. This is a classic display of cases and objects rather than an interactive centre; for an international visitor its appeal lies in the atmosphere of a living abbey and the sheer variety on show. Note that labelling is in Polish, so the site rewards visitors who arrange a guided walk of the grounds.

Visiting in practice

Plan carefully: as of 8 March the Museum itself is closed for building renovation, with no reopening date announced, so confirm the current situation by phone before making the trip. In the meantime the abbey offers a guided walk of the church, the monastery garden and St Stanisław Square, lasting roughly 40 minutes and usually ending at the monastery shop. Groups should arrange visits in advance with the museum curator (tel. 519 032 453) or through the abbey switchboard. The monastery shop is open Monday to Saturday 9:00-17:00 and Sunday 13:30-17:00, closed on major church holidays. Tours of the Cistercian brewery are available for larger groups by prior booking (tel. 505 421 702).

Getting there

Szczyrzyc sits about 55 km southeast of Kraków, in the Jodłownik commune below the Beskid Wyspowy range. By car the simplest route is the Zakopianka (national road 7) toward Myślenice, then local roads via Jodłownik or from the direction of Limanowa; allow around an hour and fifteen minutes. Without a car expect at least one change: buses and minibuses run from Kraków toward Limanowa and Jodłownik, from where the abbey is a short hop. This is very much a day trip out of the city rather than a walk from the Main Square, so budget a full half-day at least.
