What to expect

Collegium Maius in Krakow is the oldest building of the Jagiellonian University and one of the oldest surviving university colleges in Europe - a Gothic structure with an arcaded courtyard where the university has operated since the late 14th century. Today it houses the University Museum: historic professors’ halls, period astronomical instruments from the era when Nicolaus Copernicus studied here, a collection of rectors’ maces and insignia, and the famous Jagiellonian Globe - one of the earliest globes to mark the American continent.

The building’s strength is authenticity. Creaking staircases, dim Gothic interiors, and the sense that the university did not build itself a museum so much as open its own history to visitors. This is not an interactive science centre: the display is classic, cases and furnished rooms, and it works best with a guide who brings the anecdotes about professors, alchemists and student life to life. Morning guided tours run Tuesday to Friday, some of them in English - for international visitors this is the recommended way in, since the interiors carry more meaning with commentary.

One current caveat: parts of the ceremonial route are periodically taken offline. According to the museum’s website, the Jagiellonian Hall and the Copernicus Room are currently unavailable due to renovation, and the Professors’ Garden is closed until further notice. The arcaded courtyard with its cafe operates daily from 9:00 to 18:00 and can be entered without a ticket - worth a look even if you skip the museum.

Visiting in practice

The entry system is unusual, so know it before you come. Individual visits: Monday 9:00-17:00, Tuesday to Friday only from 13:30 to 17:00, Saturday 10:00-16:00; last entry half an hour before closing, closed Sundays. Weekday mornings belong to guided tours (26/14 PLN, alternating English and Polish slots). An individual ticket costs 17 PLN, reduced 10 PLN, and on Wednesdays the permanent exhibition is free. Tickets can be bought online through the university system, which saves queuing in season. An hour, with a small margin, is enough for the route.

Getting there

Collegium Maius stands at Jagiellońska 15, a two-minute walk from the Main Square, right next to the Planty park. From Kraków Główny railway station it is about fifteen minutes on foot through the Old Town; the nearest tram stops are on the edge of the Planty. The Old Town’s restricted traffic zone rules out arriving by car.

Nearby

Two minutes away, beneath the Main Square, is the Rynek Underground archaeological route. On the square itself the Sukiennice Gallery shows 19th-century Polish painting, and a few streets north the Czartoryski Museum holds Leonardo’s Lady with an Ermine.
