What to expect

The Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka is a Polish state museum devoted to the history of salt mining, once one of the crown’s most valuable industries. It is a distinct institution from the Wieliczka Salt Mine itself: the museum curates the heritage of the saltworks, and its collection is split between two seats - the above-ground Saltworks Castle (Zamek Żupny) in the centre of Wieliczka and an underground museum exhibition on level III of the mine.

The holdings include historic mining tools and machinery, archaeological finds from the saltworks, salt sculpture, and a renowned collection of salt-cellars, one of the largest in Europe. The museum also runs a research library, an archive and scholarly departments, and its standing is reflected in ties with UNESCO, ICOM, ICOMOS, ERIH and TICCIH. This is a stop for visitors who want the real industrial and social history of salt rather than the spectacle of the tourist descent - a useful complement to, not a substitute for, the mine tour.

Visiting in practice

Know this before you plan a trip: the Saltworks Castle and its courtyard are closed for renovation, which the museum expects to run until the end of 2028, after which it plans to reopen with refurbished galleries and improved accessibility. In the meantime the underground museum exhibition remains open; it sits on level III of the mine and is visited as part of the Tourist Route, so the descent itself is covered in the salt mine’s own profile. Group descents run between 8:00 and 18:00. Getting there

Wieliczka lies about 15 km south-east of central Krakow and is easy to reach: the SKA suburban train, a regional train, or a bus will get you there in roughly fifteen to twenty-five minutes. The Saltworks Castle stands at ul. Zamkowa 8 in the heart of Wieliczka, a few minutes on foot from the mine’s main entrance on ul. Daniłowicza. Both sites are only a few hundred metres from the Wieliczka Rynek-Kopalnia station.
