What to expect

Cricoteka Krakow documents the art of Tadeusz Kantor - painter, stage designer and theatre reformer, founder of the legendary Cricot 2 theatre and author of “The Dead Class” and “Wielopole, Wielopole”. The institution was established in the artist’s lifetime and on his terms: it was to be a “living archive”, not a mausoleum.

The building on the Vistula embankment is an attraction in itself: a contemporary structure suspended over a former Podgórze power station, one of the most recognisable pieces of new architecture in Krakow. Inside you will find objects and stage machines from Cricot 2 productions, costumes, drawings and documentation, presented in changing exhibitions alongside a performance and education programme.

A fair warning: this is not a conventional biographical museum with a chronological storyline. If you know Kantor’s work, the material here is first-rate; if you do not, you may leave more intrigued than informed. Ten minutes of reading up on Kantor before you visit pays off double - he is one of the most influential figures of twentieth-century avant-garde theatre, and the exhibits assume you at least suspect it.

Visiting in practice

An hour is usually enough; events and performances can extend that. Admission to the exhibitions is free on Wednesdays. Last visitors are admitted a quarter of an hour before closing, at 18:45. Alongside the main display there is a temporary exhibition, “Dzikie harce” (as of July 2026), with a family ticket at PLN 60; a combined ticket for both shows costs PLN 40 (reduced 20), and tickets can also be bought online through Cricoteka’s ticketing system. Cricoteka also runs the Tadeusz Kantor Gallery-Studio at ul. Sienna 7/5 in the Old Town - the artist’s preserved studio, open Monday to Wednesday, 11:00-18:00 (tickets PLN 10/5).

Getting there

Ul. Nadwiślańska lies in Podgórze, right by the Vistula boulevards. From Kazimierz the nicest approach is on foot across the Bernatek footbridge, then a few minutes along the river. Trams crossing Piłsudski bridge and passing rondo Matecznego stop near plac Bohaterów Getta, a few hundred metres from the museum.

Podgórze is dense with memorial museums: the Eagle Pharmacy stands on plac Bohaterów Getta, Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory is further along ul. Lipowa, and MOCAK with its contemporary art collection sits right beside it.
