What to expect

The Dominican Museum in Krakow sits beside the Dominican Order’s monastery on Stolarska Street and presents a collection spanning eight centuries of the Order of Preachers in Poland. It is small but of exceptional quality: among the highlights are some of Poland’s oldest surviving stained-glass windows (late 14th and 15th century), Gothic altar panels from the Church of the Holy Trinity, 13th-century floor tiles, 15th-century alabaster figurines and a monstrance from the Podkamień monastery linked by tradition to a bridal jewel of Queen Bona.

Other curiosities include liturgical vestments made from Empress Maria Theresa’s shroud and 15th-century Dominican postils, or biblical commentaries. This is a place for visitors drawn to medieval religious art and monastic history rather than a large interactive attraction: the display is classic and intimate, a matter of cases and artefacts rather than screens.

Visiting in practice

The museum opens three days a week: Thursday and Saturday 10:00-16:00, Friday 10:00-18:00; closed Sunday to Wednesday. Admission is free, but you must reserve a zero-cost ticket online for a specific day and time in advance - it is not a walk-in venue, so plan ahead. Guided tours are available with at least seven days’ notice (200 PLN for groups up to 15, 220 PLN up to 25, paid in cash on site). English-language tours are run by an external guide who can be booked directly. The collection is compact, so about an hour is enough to see it in full.

Getting there

The museum is at Stolarska 12, in the heart of the Old Town, a few minutes on foot from the Main Square and right next to the Dominican Basilica of the Holy Trinity. From the Rynek, walk down Stolarska towards Dominikańska Street. The nearest tram stops are on Dominikańska (Poczta Główna) and around the edge of the Planty park. The Old Town’s restricted traffic zone means you cannot drive right up to the entrance.

A few steps away on Kanonicza Street, the Archdiocesan Museum shows Krakow’s sacred art. Beneath the Main Square lies the Rynek Underground archaeological route, and on Świętego Jana Street the Czartoryski Museum holds Leonardo’s Lady with an Ermine.
