What to expect

The Executioner Museum “Kacia Nora” is a private collection of historic torture instruments tucked into a cellar right on Krakow’s Main Square. Opened in 2013 by collector and history enthusiast Mariusz Aab, it gathers more than a hundred objects once used by the old system of justice - from the heretic’s fork to the Nuremberg maiden. The museum describes the set as the largest arsenal of its kind on public display in Poland.

Much of the impact comes from the setting itself. The exhibition sits inside a 15th-century cellar six metres below street level, fitted out with a timber structure of beams and mezzanines. The interplay of stone, wood and low light gives the place a raw, authentic atmosphere, and the instruments are grouped by purpose: some meant to humiliate people condemned for minor offences, others to extract confessions, and others still to carry out punishment at a public execution. This is a dark, literal subject and not suitable for young children - worth knowing before you decide it is for you.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 19:00. A standard ticket costs 30 PLN and a reduced one 25 PLN; a guided visit of about an hour costs 75 PLN. The guide walks you through the collection, explains how each instrument worked and weaves in the history of Krakow and the executioner’s role in it. Tours are offered in Polish and in English, so international visitors can follow the commentary. For organised groups and schools the museum also arranges old-craft workshops and historical re-enactment shows. Book a slot through the reservation form on the museum’s website or by phone.

Getting there

The museum is at Rynek Główny 29, directly on the largest medieval square in Europe, a few steps from the Cloth Hall and the Town Hall Tower. From Kraków Główny railway station it is roughly a fifteen-minute walk through the Old Town. The nearest tram stops are on the edge of the Planty park; the Old Town’s restricted traffic zone rules out arriving by car right at the entrance. The location makes it easy to fold a short visit into a day spent around the Main Square.

A few steps away, beneath the square, the Rynek Underground traces medieval Krakow along an archaeological route.
