What to expect

The Kościuszko Museum sits on top of the Kościuszko Mound in the Zwierzyniec district, inside the restored casemates of Bastion V of the 19th-century Fort no. 2 “Kościuszko.” Its core is the permanent exhibition “Kościuszko - a Hero for Our Times,” a narrative display that presents Tadeusz Kościuszko, the leader of Poland’s 1794 uprising and a general in the American Revolution, as a still-relevant figure rather than a marble statue, complete with a “Memory Capsule.” Admission also lets you climb the mound itself, an earthen monument raised in his honour, and follow an educational trail up its slope.

This is as much an outdoor viewpoint as a museum: the top of the mound gives one of the best panoramas of Krakow and the Vistula valley, so plan for the walk and the weather. The site’s website has an English section, but it does not confirm English captions inside the exhibition, so check ahead if you need English materials or a guided visit. Allow a couple of hours if you want to combine the climb, the views and the display.

Visiting in practice

The mound and museum are open daily, 9:00 to 19:00. A single ticket covers both the climb and every permanent and temporary exhibition on site: 34 PLN standard, 26 PLN reduced, with family tickets (68-85 PLN) and a group rate of 25 PLN per person for parties of ten or more. Entry is free on three dates tied to Kościuszko: 4 February (his birthday), 24 March (anniversary of the 1794 insurrection) and 15 October (anniversary of his death). The ticket office is by the car park entrance, on the right.

Getting there

The Kościuszko Mound is not in the Old Town. It stands on St Bronisława’s Hill in Zwierzyniec, roughly 3 km west of the Main Market Square. The simplest approach is to take a tram to the Salwator terminus and then walk uphill, a fairly steep fifteen-minute climb, or catch a bus that stops closer to the mound. The address is al. Waszyngtona 1. Given the walk and the elevation, wear proper shoes.
