What to expect

The Museum of the Limanowa Land is a classic regional museum roughly 65 km south-east of Kraków, worth a stop if you are already exploring the Beskid foothills rather than a day-trip from the city on its own. Its roots reach back to the interwar collecting of the Gawron brothers; it was formally founded in 1970, became a state institution in 1987 and has been run by the town since 1992. Over the decades it has gathered around 26,000 objects covering the history, ethnography, art and photography of the region.

The setting is the historic Marsów Manor, which keeps its Louis-Philippe style hall and period furnishings. Six permanent exhibitions include a pharmacy collection from the old chemist’s shop of Klementyna Bączkowska, Poland’s largest collection of decorative watch-chain fobs (359 pieces from the 18th to 20th century), material on the Sowliny oil refinery, paintings by Maksymilian Brożek, and displays on the 1914 Battle of Limanowa and the old Polish-Slovak trade routes. Labelling is in Polish, so international visitors get the most from the manor and the objects themselves.

Visiting in practice

Hours are seasonal. In the tourist season (1 May to 30 September) the museum opens Tuesday to Saturday 9:00-17:00, and Sundays 9:00-17:00 in July and August only. Off season (1 October to 30 April) it opens Tuesday to Saturday 8:00-16:00 and is closed on Sundays and Mondays. A regular ticket is 15 PLN, reduced 10 PLN (children, students, pensioners, large-family card holders), and temporary exhibitions 5 PLN. Groups of 10 or more pay 13 and 8 PLN; a guided tour is 50 PLN for groups up to 25 and 100 PLN for larger ones. Allow about an hour for the six permanent displays.

Getting there

The museum sits at Józefa Marka 13 in the centre of Limanowa, about 65 km south-east of Kraków. By car take the Zakopianka road (DK7) and then the route through Mszana Dolna or Dobra, roughly ninety minutes depending on traffic. Without a car, regular buses and minibuses run from Kraków to Limanowa; the stop is in the town centre, a few minutes on foot from Marsów Manor. This is a trip out of Kraków, not a walk from the Old Town.

Limanowa is far from Kraków’s museum quarter, but the manor’s collections echo several venues in the network.
