What to expect

MOCAK in Krakow, the Museum of Contemporary Art in the Zabłocie district, occupies former factory halls on the grounds of Oskar Schindler’s enamel works - white, glass-fronted architecture rising straight out of Podgórze’s post-industrial landscape. The programme rests on two pillars: the permanent MOCAK Collection, shown on level -1, and temporary exhibitions that change several times a year, usually thematic and pairing Polish artists with international ones.

The museum’s profile is distinct: recent art, often conceptual, socially engaged, commenting on history and politics. This is not the place for classical painting or comfortable pictures - some works provoke, some need their labels read, and certain exhibitions divide audiences. That unevenness is part of the appeal; you rarely leave indifferent. The building is spacious, clearly laid out and fully accessible for visitors with disabilities, and the bookshop has an excellent art section. Importantly for international visitors, exhibition labels and texts run in both Polish and English throughout, which is not a given in Polish museums.

If contemporary art is unfamiliar territory, MOCAK is an approachable entry point: the scale is human, an afternoon covers everything, and the curation explains rather than mystifies.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open Tuesday to Sunday, 11:00-19:00, closed Mondays. A standard ticket costs 30 PLN, reduced 20 PLN, family 65 PLN. Every Thursday, entry to the permanent MOCAK Collection is free - note this covers level -1 only, not the temporary shows. The ticket desk closes at 18:30 and last entry to the main building is half an hour before closing. One organisational quirk worth knowing: on Wednesdays from 16:00 to 19:00 the museum runs quiet hours - no guided tours or loud audio - appreciated by anyone sensitive to stimulation. No booking is needed outside openings and special events; tickets are sold at the desk and online.

Getting there

MOCAK stands at Lipowa 4 in Zabłocie, on the south side of the Vistula. The easiest route is a tram to the Zabłocie stop and a few minutes’ walk along Lipowa street; from the Main Square the whole trip takes about 20 minutes. On foot from the Old Town, the walk through Kazimierz and across the Bernatek footbridge takes about half an hour and is pleasant in itself. Drivers can usually find street parking in Zabłocie, though weekends get tight.

The neighbourhood completes the visit naturally: right next door is Oskar Schindler’s Enamel Factory with its exhibition on occupied Krakow, and across Podgórze sits Cricoteka, the centre documenting Tadeusz Kantor’s art. Across the river, a fifteen-minute walk along the embankment, the Manggha Museum holds a fine Japanese art collection. If you are planning a trip out of the city from this side, the Wieliczka Salt Mine lies a short drive to the south-east.
