What to expect

MuFo is the oldest photography museum in Poland and the only institution in the country devoted entirely to the medium - the definitive photography museum in Krakow. The main site at ul. Rakowicka 22A is a modern, generously spaced building reopened after a full redevelopment. Its core exhibition, “Co robi zdjęcie?” (“What does a photograph do?”), is not a chronological history of photography but an argument about how photographs work: how they document, manipulate, build memory and shape identity. Alongside the prints you will find historic cameras and equipment from the museum’s extensive collection.

The second site, MuFo Józefitów, is the museum’s intimate former headquarters and can only be visited on a guided tour at set times. A frank word: if photography is not your subject, the main exhibition can feel conceptual - this is a museum about the medium and its ideas, not a greatest-hits gallery of famous photographs. If you take pictures at all, even with a phone, it will give you plenty to chew on.

Visiting in practice

No booking is needed for MuFo Rakowicka; last entry is 45 minutes before closing. Admission to the main exhibition is free on Tuesdays. MuFo Józefitów works differently: guided tours run Monday to Wednesday in the morning, Thursday and Friday in the late afternoon, and Saturday at 11:00 - the Saturday slot must be reserved at least three days ahead. Tickets are sold on site and online through the museum’s ticketing page; captions at the main exhibition are aimed at an international audience, so English speakers manage comfortably.

Getting there

MuFo Rakowicka stands on ul. Rakowicka, roughly a 15-minute walk from Kraków Główny railway station and the Galeria Krakowska mall - leave the station on the ul. Lubicz side and head north along Rakowicka towards the Rakowicki Cemetery. From the Main Square it is about a 25-minute walk, or take a tram towards Rondo Mogilskie and walk the last few minutes. If you are arriving in Krakow by train, this is one of the easiest museums to slot in first.

Nearby

On the other side of the tracks, on ul. Wita Stwosza, sits the Home Army Museum in Krakow - a natural second stop in this part of town. A 15-minute walk brings you to the Old Town, home to the Czartoryski Museum with Leonardo’s “Lady with an Ermine” and the Jan Matejko House on Floriańska street.
