What to expect

The Museum of Illusions in Krakow is a hands-on attraction where your own senses are the exhibit. The collection is split into four groups - optical, physical, special and historical illusions - and a few new stations are added each year. You explore actively rather than reading labels: drawing with light, casting shadows, and stepping into an upside-down room where your photo looks as if gravity had been switched off. It is squarely aimed at families with children and at anyone who prefers doing to reading, so it works well as a break from Krakow’s heavier historical museums, especially with kids in tow.

The setting adds character. The museum occupies a historic manor house that once belonged to the Potocki family, with dozens of original decorative details and 19th-century fireplaces still in place, so the contrast between the period rooms and the modern illusions is part of the fun. Staff are on the floor to explain how each effect works, which helps younger visitors. There is no dedicated English tour, but the exhibits are visual and largely self-explanatory, so a language barrier is minimal. Plan on roughly an hour, more if you are photographing everything.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open every day: Monday to Friday from 10:00 to 19:00, and Saturday and Sunday a little longer, from 10:00 to 20:00. A standard ticket is 59 PLN, reduced (students, pupils, seniors) 45 PLN, a preschool ticket for ages 3-6 is 19 PLN, and children under 3 enter free. A family ticket for two adults with one or two children costs 155 PLN. Booking online saves 10 percent, and groups over ten people get a 30 percent discount. Free entry applies to visitors with disabilities and their carers, licensed guides and ICOM card holders, among others. Children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult, and tickets can also be bought at reception.

Getting there

The museum sits at Straszewskiego 15, on the western edge of the Old Town, right along the Planty park and close to Wawel Hill. From the Main Square it is about a ten-minute walk, and Wawel is just a few minutes further south, so it slots easily into an Old Town day. The nearest tram stops are on aleja Krasińskiego and Franciszkańska. Because the Old Town is a restricted-traffic zone, arriving on foot or by tram is easiest.

Nearby

A few minutes west, on aleja Krasińskiego, the Stained Glass Museum offers a working studio and demonstrations of the craft. Heading toward the Main Square you pass Collegium Maius, the Jagiellonian University’s oldest building, and a little further north on Plac Szczepański the Bunkier Sztuki Gallery shows contemporary art.
