What to expect

The Nikifor Museum in Krynica-Zdrój is devoted to one of Europe’s most celebrated naive painters, Nikifor Krynicki (Epifaniusz Drowniak). It occupies Romanówka, a nineteenth-century wooden villa typical of the spa architecture of Krynica, reconstructed in 1992-1994 on its present site. The display gathers the artist’s watercolours, gouaches and drawings from across his career - Orthodox churches, the architecture of Krynica, interiors, railway stations and portraits.

The strength of the visit is the meeting of art and biography. A self-taught Lemko painter who lived most of his life in poverty and obscurity, Nikifor is now prized by collectors worldwide. Documents, publications and photographs round out the exhibition and set his extraordinary story against the history of the region’s Lemko community. For an international visitor it is a small, atmospheric museum that rewards anyone drawn to outsider art.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:00, and Thursday and Sunday from 10:00 to 15:00; it is closed on Mondays. Last entry is half an hour before closing. A standard ticket costs 24 PLN, reduced 19 PLN, and admission is free on Thursdays. Around 45 minutes is enough for the intimate collection.

Getting there

Krynica-Zdrój lies about 120 km south-east of Krakow in the Beskid Sądecki mountains. By car the drive takes roughly two and a half to three hours via Nowy Sącz. Trains and long-distance buses run from Krakow, usually with a change in Nowy Sącz; from the Krynica station the villa on Bulwary Dietla is a few minutes on foot along the Kryniczanka stream. Treat it as a full-day trip, best combined with a stroll around the spa resort itself.

For folk and naive art in a wider context, the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow’s Kazimierz district is the natural companion. Classic Polish painting can be seen at the National Museum Main Building and the Gallery of Polish Art in the Sukiennice.
