What to expect

The Orava Ethnographic Park in Zubrzyca Górna is an open-air museum (skansen) devoted to the folk culture of Orava, a distinct region at the southern edge of Małopolska on the Slovak border, shaped by pastoral farming, forestry and traditional crafts. At its centre stands the 17th-century Moniak manor with its preserved interiors, surrounded by relocated examples of wooden architecture: an 18th-century inn from Podwilk, an 1839 cottage from Jabłonka, farm outbuildings and a small wooden church dedicated to Our Lady of the Snows.

This is a full open-air estate rather than a single gallery, so plan to walk the grounds and step inside the historic buildings. The museum opened to visitors in 1955, became a registered state museum in 2006, and now operates under the Małopolska regional authority with permanent and temporary exhibitions plus seasonal events. Labelling is primarily in Polish; if you want the interiors explained, book the guided tour in advance rather than relying on signage.

Visiting in practice

The park is open daily: 9:00-17:00 from May to September and 9:00-15:00 from October to April. A standard ticket to the permanent exhibition is 25 PLN, reduced 15 PLN; temporary exhibitions add 5 PLN. Mondays are free, but access is then limited to the park grounds - the building interiors stay closed. A guided tour costs 120 PLN per group of up to 30 people and runs about two hours, which is the realistic time to budget if you want to see inside the manor and cottages. For an international visitor this is a half-day to full-day trip, best combined with other stops in the Podhale/Orava area rather than squeezed into a Kraków city day.

Getting there

Zubrzyca Górna lies in the Jabłonka commune, roughly 85 km south of Kraków, right by the Slovak frontier. By car the route runs through Rabka-Zdrój and Nowy Targ toward Jabłonka; by public transport the practical way is a bus or minibus from Kraków to Jabłonka, then a local connection on to Zubrzyca Górna. It is a genuine day out into the mountains, not a short hop from the Old Town, so factor in the travel time.
