What to expect

The Pharmacy Museum in Krakow, run by the Jagiellonian University’s medical school, fills a historic townhouse at Floriańska 25 and ranks among the largest museums of pharmacy in Europe. The permanent exhibition spreads across twelve rooms on three levels - from the cellars to the attic - and shows what an apothecary’s work looked like over the centuries: complete interiors of old pharmacies, majolica jars and pharmacy glassware, mortars, scales, herbaria and laboratory equipment for making medicines.

The building itself supplies the drama: a cellar with the feel of an alchemist’s laboratory and an attic of the kind traditionally used for drying herbs. It is an unobvious, pleasingly old-fashioned museum - wooden cabinets, glass cases and the smell of old interiors, not a touchscreen in sight. If you want interactive attractions, look elsewhere; if you enjoy the history of science and craft, or simply want to see the inside of an authentic Old Town townhouse, this is a quiet gem of the non-touristy kind.

Visiting in practice

Allow about an hour and a half; last entry is 45 minutes before closing. Watch the weekly rhythm: Tuesdays the museum opens in the afternoon (12:00-18:30), Wednesday to Saturday in the morning (9:30-15:00), and it is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Groups can book a guided tour (tickets 22/14 PLN). Two practical notes for visitors: there is no lift in the building, and the Krakow Tourist Card is not accepted here.

Getting there

Floriańska 25 sits in the very centre of the Old Town, on the pedestrian street linking the Main Square with St Florian’s Gate - three minutes on foot from the square, under ten from Kraków Główny railway station. The zone is closed to traffic, so your feet are the only transport you need.

A few dozen metres up the same street, at number 41, stands the Jan Matejko House - two intimate museums on one street make a ready-made morning plan. Around the corner on ul. Pijarska is the Czartoryski Museum, and beneath the Main Square itself, the Rynek Underground.
