What to expect

The Polish Aviation Museum Krakow occupies the grounds of the former Rakowice-Czyżyny airfield, one of the oldest military airfields in Europe. This is not a single-hall museum: aircraft stand in exhibition halls, in historic hangars and out in the open, and walking between them is part of the experience.

The collection covers Polish designs - headlined by the legendary interwar PZL machines - alongside a broad sweep of Cold War aviation: MiG and Sukhoi fighters, helicopters, trainers and transports, plus gliders and an impressive collection of aircraft engines. The sheer scale lands whether or not you can tell a MiG-21 from a MiG-29.

Honestly put: this is a paradise for enthusiasts and families with children rather than an interactive science centre. A large part of the display stands outdoors, so weather genuinely matters - in the rain the visit loses half its charm. Being a museum with an international audience of aviation fans, it handles foreign visitors routinely, but come prepared for a lot of ground to cover on foot.

Visiting in practice

Allow two to three hours for the halls and the outdoor park at a comfortable pace. Admission is free on Tuesdays. A standard ticket costs PLN 35, reduced PLN 21, family PLN 92, and children under 7 enter free. Ticket sales and last entry end 45 minutes before closing. The museum publishes its opening hours as a monthly schedule on its website - check before you go, as they vary, and note it closes on Polish public and church holidays.

Getting there

The museum sits on al. Jana Pawła II, between the city centre and Nowa Huta. The tram is easiest: the stop “Muzeum Lotnictwa Polskiego” is served by lines 4, 5, 9, 10, 52 and 75. Buses 124 and 424 reach the Ugorek stop, about 650 metres from the entrance. Drivers can use the free visitor car parks on ul. Markowskiego and ul. Gnysia.

Nearby

Right next door, in former hangars, the Museum of Engineering and Technology runs its Hangar Czyżyny branch. Riding the tram back towards the centre, it is worth getting off near Rakowicka for the MuFo Museum of Photography and the Home Army Museum.
