What to expect

The Museum of Road Engineering in Szczucin, run by the Road Engineering History Unit of Poland’s national roads authority (GDDKiA), holds one of the largest and most valuable collections in the world of machines, tools and memorabilia connected with building and maintaining roads. More than a hundred exhibits fill the site: road equipment, rollers, tools, historical documents, uniforms, maps, medals, photographs and original elements of road surfaces from different eras. It is a narrow, engineering-minded subject presented on a scale you will not find elsewhere in Poland - a genuine draw if industrial and technical heritage is your thing.

The heart of the museum is an open-air exhibition spread across nearly two hectares: a park of machinery that you walk through like an avenue of successive road-building eras, from horse-drawn gear and heavy steam rollers to more modern equipment. An indoor section, arranged by theme, gathers the smaller holdings - documents, coins, banners and measuring and laboratory instruments. Signage and materials are primarily in Polish, so it rewards curiosity about the machines themselves; organised groups can arrange a guided visit in advance.

Visiting in practice

Admission is free. The indoor and outdoor displays are open all year on weekdays, Monday to Friday from 7:00 to 16:00. In season, from 11 April to 25 October, the open-air exhibition is additionally open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00 (and on selected public holidays). The outdoor park is set up for independent visiting, and a relaxed walk around the machinery takes anywhere from one to three hours. Organised groups are asked to reserve a slot by phone or email beforehand.

Getting there

Szczucin sits in north-eastern Małopolska, in the Dąbrowa district by the Vistula, about 90 km north-east of Krakow - a dedicated day out rather than a stop you fit around sightseeing in the city. By car it is roughly an hour and a half, most easily via Tarnów or Dąbrowa Tarnowska, and there is parking at the museum on ulica 1-go Maja 39. Using public transport, the practical route is a bus from Tarnów or Dąbrowa Tarnowska; there is no convenient direct rail link from Krakow. Given the distance, this is one for visitors with a real interest in industrial heritage and time to spare.
