What to expect

The Stained Glass Museum in Krakow is not a conventional gallery but a living workshop. It occupies a building put up in the early twentieth century specifically for Krakow’s stained glass studio, where designs by the leading artists of the Young Poland movement were executed. Craftsmen and artists still work here today, and a visit means walking through the active workshop: tables spread with cut glass, full-size design cartoons, and every stage of making a window, from drawing to lead soldering.

That is both the museum’s greatest strength and its main caveat. If you expect rooms of backlit windows to browse at your own pace, you will be disappointed: entry is by guided tour only, at fixed times, and the whole visit takes about 45 minutes. What you get instead is something no other Krakow museum offers - watching a craft practised continuously in the same place for over a century.

Visiting in practice

Tours run with a minimum of two people. English-language tours start at 12:00 and 15:00; Polish tours at 12:30 and 15:30 on weekdays, with extra Saturday slots at 13:30, 14:30 and 16:30 plus a 10:00 children’s tour (reservation required). Groups of ten or more can arrange other times by phone or email. Tickets are sold through the online booking system or at the desk; the museum does not publish a price list on its website, so check prices when you book. Closed Sundays, Mondays and on church and public holidays. Since the tour moves through a real workshop, this is a guided experience rather than a wander-around museum - plan around the tour times, not around opening hours.

Getting there

The studio is at al. Zygmunta Krasińskiego 23, on the western edge of the centre between the Błonia meadow and the Vistula, a few minutes from Dębnicki Bridge. Numerous tram and bus lines run along the Aleje Trzech Wieszczów ring road; from the Main Square it is a walk of about 20 minutes via Zwierzyniecka street.

Nearby

Across the river by Rondo Grunwaldzkie stands the Manggha Museum of Japanese art. A fifteen-minute walk takes you to the Józef Mehoffer House on Krupnicza - Mehoffer being one of the artists whose windows were made here - and the National Museum’s Main Building sits by the Błonia meadow.
