What to expect

The Sukiennice Gallery occupies the upper floor of the medieval Cloth Hall in the middle of the Main Market Square and is a branch of the National Museum in Krakow. It is the best single place in Poland to see 19th-century Polish painting in one concise sweep: monumental history canvases led by Jan Matejko’s Prussian Homage, Henryk Siemiradzki’s Nero’s Torches, Józef Chełmoński’s Four-in-Hand, alongside Michałowski, Grottger and the painting of the era from classicism to symbolism.

An honest measure: this is four rooms, not a labyrinth. A visit takes an hour, ninety minutes at most, and that is precisely the strength of the place - you get the essence of the 19th-century national imagination without museum fatigue. If you expect a survey of all Polish art or interactive displays, adjust your expectations: this is a classic picture gallery in a historic interior, with the square visible from the windows and the tourist crowd one floor below, among the souvenir stalls of the arcades.

Visiting in practice

A ticket costs 35 PLN (reduced 25 PLN), and on Tuesdays entry to the permanent exhibition is free - expect more visitors then. Tickets are sold on site and at bilety.mnk.pl. The gallery entrance is easy to miss among the market stalls downstairs, so look for the museum signage; outside peak season the rooms are rarely crowded, because most of the crowd on the square never climbs the stairs. The paintings carry a lot of Polish historical context, so the descriptions are worth reading; it slots easily into an Old Town walk without any special logistics.

Getting there

Few addresses are easier: the Cloth Hall stands in the middle of the Main Market Square, at the heart of the pedestrian zone. Every point of the Old Town is within walking distance; the nearest tram stops ring the Planty park, including Dominikańska street and the Słowacki Theatre, each a few minutes’ walk from the square.

Nearby

Directly beneath the square lies the Rynek Underground with its archaeological route, and five minutes away the Czartoryski Museum with the Lady with an Ermine. Ten minutes on foot brings you to Wawel Royal Castle.
