What to expect

The Tatra National Park Nature Education Centre in Zakopane is a modern exhibition devoted to the nature of the Tatra Mountains. Its centrepiece is the largest model of the Tatras in Poland, presented with narration and multimedia, which lets you take in the whole range at a glance before you set off into the hills. The display is rounded out with nature films, realistic three-dimensional dioramas of mountain meadows and forests, and a re-created cave interior.

Families with children have an interactive Discovery Room with educational games, and there is a shop on site selling mountain guidebooks and souvenirs. For an international visitor it makes an excellent first stop: a compact, well-designed briefing on how the Tatra ecosystem works and how to explore the national park responsibly.

Visiting in practice

The centre is open Monday to Saturday: in summer (1 May-30 September) from 8:00 to 16:00 with last entry at 15:00, and in winter (1 October-30 April) from 8:00 to 15:00 with last entry at 14:00. It is closed on Sundays and selected public holidays. Entries to the exhibition are timed every 20 minutes and the visit takes about 50 minutes. Admission to the nature exhibition is free but requires an online reservation; the interactive Discovery Room is ticketed (15 PLN online, 20 PLN on site).

Getting there

Zakopane lies about 100 km south of Krakow. By car the S7 expressway and the “Zakopianka” road usually take around two hours, longer at peak season. Frequent buses and minibuses run from Krakow to Zakopane. The centre stands on Chałubińskiego Street, close to the town centre and within easy walking distance of the bus and railway stations. It is a natural stop on the way to a day in the mountains.
