Museum of Torture

What to expect

The Torture Museum sits on Floriańska Street, right on the main tourist route through Krakow’s Old Town and a couple of minutes from the Main Square. It is a private dark-tourism attraction built around reconstructions of instruments of punishment and torture used in medieval and early-modern Europe, grouped into devices for carrying out the death penalty, tools for extracting confessions, and implements of shaming punishment. Each is accompanied by written descriptions and short educational films, with an executioner character acting as your guide through the exhibition.

Set expectations before you go. These are modern reconstructions rather than an original historical collection, and the tone leans toward sensational entertainment with a streak of dark humour rather than a scholarly account of legal history. The museum runs a full English-language site and its exhibit descriptions and films are offered in English, so international visitors can follow the exhibition on their own without a guide.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open every day from 10:00 to 21:00, which makes it one of the few Old Town attractions you can also visit in the evening once most Krakow museums have closed. A standard ticket is 35 PLN, reduced 25 PLN, and a family ticket (2+2) is 90 PLN. Visits are self-guided at your own pace; the exhibition is compact, so under an hour is usually enough. Some visitors note the price is on the high side for the size of the collection, which is worth weighing if you are on a tight sightseeing budget.

Getting there

The Torture Museum is at Floriańska 10, in the heart of the Old Town, only about a hundred metres from the Main Square (Rynek Główny) and right by the medieval Florian Gate. From Kraków Główny railway station it is a ten-minute walk through the Planty park and the Florian Gate. The whole area is a restricted-traffic zone, so arriving on foot is by far the easiest option.
