This is the cathedral’s own treasury. The collection holds some of Poland’s oldest and most important royal regalia alongside religious treasures: metalwork, textiles, paintings and sculptures given to the cathedral over the centuries by kings, bishops and nobles, counted among the nation’s most valued heirlooms.

The museum is named after John Paul II, who as Karol Wojtyła served as Archbishop of Krakow before becoming pope. Expect a compact, traditional display of sacred and royal objects rather than an interactive experience. It is a rewarding short stop if you are already exploring Wawel Hill and are interested in the cathedral’s place in Polish history; English-language labelling is best confirmed on arrival.

Visiting in practice

The museum is open Monday to Saturday, 9:00-17:00, and closed on Sundays. It stands at Wawel 3, on the castle hill itself. Getting there

Wawel Hill rises at the southern edge of Krakow’s Old Town, about a ten-minute walk from the Main Square (Rynek Główny) down Grodzka Street. The nearest tram stops, Wawel and Stradom, sit at the foot of the hill. The museum is next to the cathedral within the hill complex; note again that its entrance and tickets are separate from the Royal Castle museums.
